“Breathing in, I calm my body. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment!” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
There is so much chaos in the world right now. At every level and every turn. I know it isn’t easy. During the most complicated times, you can find peace in the simplest of ways–connecting with your breath is a great way to achieve the calmness of mind you desire. Breathing deeply throughout the day helps us connect to the present moment, calms our nervous system, and allows for a pause in an all too busy and overwhelming external world. Here are three tricks to remind you to breathe deeply throughout the day:
- Make stone art. I had a client in a high-stress job come to me for help with de-stressing throughout the day. He barely had a moment at lunch to employ any tools because his beeper would go off the whole time. So there really was no way we could have him practice anything other than connecting to his breath. So we made a stone that said Breathe on it. He loved it. He shared that whenever he got stressed, he’d reach in his pocket and take a deep breath. You can make your own stone by either just writing on a stone or buying a clear one at a crafts store, get some modge podge and paste the printout of the word breathe on a stone. Carry it all day to remind you.
- Download a mindfulness app. This Mindfulness Bell app can be set to ring throughout the day and when it dings: you take a deep cleansing breath.
- Say your mantras while breathing. Write down the mantra and put it on your desk, or computer, or phone. Every time you look at it, inhale and exhale your mantra. Maybe it’s: inhale calm, exhale peace. Or inhale “I am safe” and exhale, “so relax”. Whatever resonates, write it down and put it in a place that will remind you to breathe deeply.
I can’t say enough about the power and magic of our breath. The best part of it all is that we have access to it anywhere, at any time. Just through breathwork, we can achieve calmness of mind, which is the jewel of life. In Episode 6, I guide you in a conscious breathing exercise, check it out here.
